These amps sound really great when they are working. The field coil is helpful in finding the approximate age. The field coil speaker was used in amps during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Guitar amp probably first invented by Rickenbacker, Valco popped up shortly afterwords.Īnd it's from the early 1940's probably.

So, this amp was originally paired with a matching lap steel guitar, probably.īut what you are looking at is the dawn of guitar amps. These companies cashed in on it, by manufacturing a matching amp and Lap Steel Guitar, as a set. Hawaiian music used to be the most popular in the world. You will NOTE: that the input jacks say "instruments," and not "microphone." These amps were primarily intended for electric lap steel guitars.or a microphone.

You can also convert it to a 'modern' standard 1/4 jack - that's pretty easy to do also. You will also find folks selling ready made cables too. Easy to wire an adaptor to a 1/4 inch plug. You can find the mating plug, 75-MC1M, on ebay. The output jack you have is fairly common for old Valco instruments, as well as a lot of old PA and radio gear. I have mine tuned to C6 currently, although it may be headed to E9 like JH's. I did a couple of posts on my blog about cleaning mine up: The serial on yours indicates it was made in 1957. Great find for such little money! The pickups on them are wonderful. I have 3 (I think) Supro lap steels, including one identical to yours.
